The Namiki Yukari Royale Frog fountain pen turns a symbol of safe return into golden frogs modeled against polished black urushi lacquer.
Kaeru, the Japanese word for frog, sounds like the word for return. That connection has made the animal a symbol of safe journeys and a motif for travelers' amulets, hospitality, and the welcome of coming home.
The frog's many offspring suggest fertility, while its metamorphosis evokes renewal, rebirth, and the continuing transformation of human life. It also symbolizes luck, longevity, happiness, prosperity, and health. Yumi depicts the frogs in Togidashi-Taka Maki-e, combining raised lacquer decoration with a burnished background.
Made in Japan, the pen has a two-tone 18k gold nib and takes ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink. It measures 149.2 mm long with its screw-on cap in place and has a barrel width of 15 mm. A converter and wooden presentation box are included.
