The cherry blossom is a flower from many trees of the genus Prunus or Prunus subg. Cerasus. Also known as Japanese cherry and Sakura, it is considered the national flower of Japan. Chinkin is a technique that uses special chisels to engrave a pattern on the lacquered surface. The design is infused with color by applying an additional layer of lacquer to the chisel tracings and embedding gold leaf or gold powder.
