The Pelikan Toledo M700 fountain pen carries fine hand engraving on a gold-finished sterling silver sleeve, continuing a decorative tradition begun in 1931.
Pelikan adopted the Toledo design in 1931, and its character remains recognizable in today’s collection. Black resin components and a gold-plated, pelican-beak clip frame the decorative sleeve, made from .925 sterling silver with a 24-karat gold finish.
The name comes from Toledo, the Spanish city that became a center for damascening after Arab craftsmen brought the technique to Spain. The craft has a much longer history, with examples in civilizations including Egypt, Greece, Rome, Japan, and China. In the traditional process, a small hammer works gold threads or sheets into iron or steel. Heating the decorated metal to about 800 °C oxidizes and darkens the steel, making the gold pattern stand out.
Pelikan’s modern sleeve is sterling silver. It undergoes successive treatments before receiving its gold finish and fine hand engraving. The craftsman signs and numbers the finished instrument, leaving a record of the individual work behind it.
A two-tone 18-karat gold nib with rhodium decoration completes the M700. Made in Germany, it has a screw-on cap and a piston filling system for bottled ink. A green transparent ink window shows how much remains in the reservoir.
It measures 126 mm closed and 153 mm with the cap posted. The barrel is 121 mm long and 13 mm wide. It weighs 23 g with the cap and 16 g without it.
