Additional information:
  • This Nippon Art piece shows captures the sudden flurry of a pair of pheasants at take off. The background is filled with a flutter of heart-shaped particles raised by the beating wings. The pheasant on the barrel, the male, is rising up to meet the female on the cap. The two birds always align beak to beak when the cap is screwed onto the barrel. This piece is made by “Kokkokai”, a group of Maki-e artisans formed in 1931 centered around Gonroku Matsuda, who later became a living national treasure. The name “Kokkokai” was derived from a quote by Ryosuke Namiki the founder, “In the way Sumo is Japan’s national sport, Maki-e is the nation’s light.” This piece is made with Hira Maki-e technique where the lacquered main design is decorated with sprinkled gold and silver powders. Several additional layers of lacquer are then applied. After the lacquer is hardened, it is then burnished.
