The Nakaya Writer Piccolo Shu fountain pen wears vermilion Wajima urushi across its ebonite components, with a gold-plated clip and 14k gold nib.
Shu's vermilion has a slightly yellowish red tone with a long history in China and Japan. Used in palaces, shrines, and temples, the color has been associated with protection and longevity. Cinnabar is its traditional source, linking this glossy red to the history of lacquer. The band, cap, barrel, and grip section are all ebonite coated with Wajima urushi, extending the vermilion finish across all four components. A gold-plated clip and 14k gold nib complete the pen.
An urushi lacquer artisan finishes each handmade pen in Japan. Nakaya's story began in 1999, when Toshiya Nakata founded the company with craftspeople who had worked at Platinum Pen for more than 40 years. The name comes from Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum Pen's predecessor.
The pen accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink and has a screw-on cap. At 129 mm closed, the Piccolo has a barrel 116 mm long and 15 mm wide. It weighs 23 g with the cap or 15 g without it.
