The Nakaya Writer Portable Heki-Tamenuri fountain pen brings turquoise tame-nuri urushi to an ebonite body with a 14k gold nib and gold-plated clip.
Heki-iro is the turquoise color behind Heki-Tamenuri. Translucent lacquer leaves the color beneath visible, creating the depth of the tame-nuri finish. Natural urushi can vary slightly in shade, so individual pens may have subtle differences in color. A gold-plated clip and 14k gold nib complement the lacquered ebonite body.
An urushi lacquer artisan finishes each handmade pen in Japan. Nakaya's story began in 1999, when Toshiya Nakata founded the company with craftspeople who had worked at Platinum Pen for more than 40 years. The name comes from Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum Pen's predecessor.
The pen accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink and has a screw-on cap. It measures 149 mm closed and 174 mm with the cap posted. The barrel is 128 mm long and 15 mm wide, and the pen weighs 20 g with the cap or 15 g without it.

How is the Heki-Tamenuri color created?
Heki-iro is the turquoise color used for this finish. In the tame-nuri technique, translucent lacquer lets the color beneath show through, adding depth to the surface.
Can I use cartridges or bottled ink?
The pen takes ink cartridges. A converter lets you use bottled ink instead.
Will every pen have exactly the same color?
The shade can vary slightly because the finish uses natural urushi. Individual pens may have subtle differences even within the same finish.
How should I care for the urushi finish?
Keep the pen out of direct sunlight and away from extremely dry conditions. If ink gets on the exterior, wipe it off promptly with a soft, damp cloth. Contact Nakaya if the ink remains.

Over my years of pen collecting, I have seen several excellent reviews of Nakaya pens and their history. I have attempted to purchase a Nakaya Heki-Tamenuri pen several times, but typically the pens were beyond my budget, sold out, or require being on a waiting list for several months.
As expected, this Nakaya pen writes beautifully (M-flex). And although it is a relatively large pen, it is remarkably light, fits comfortably in my hand, and is a delight to use.
I purchased this fine pen from IguanaSell given their Nakaya relationship (as an unauthorized dealer), my prior purchases from the dealer, and their excellent customer service.

A fine piece of work, for everyday use, stiffer than I expected. I think the old Nakata nibs were better tuned. In any case it is always a sample of the Nakaya fineness of product!
