Overview

The Montblanc Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson ballpoint follows the voyage of Treasure Island through black resin, a treasure-map X, and nautical details.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, Stevenson sought freedom and escape into imagined worlds. His essays, travel accounts, and fiction introduced readers to Long John Silver, Captain Flint, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Engraved crosses and a larger X on the black precious resin barrel recall the treasure map in Treasure Island.

Vertical lines on the upper section suggest the planks of the Hispaniola and a sea chest. The overall form and the rings on the cone recall an extendable spyglass, while the platinum-coated clip resembles a belaying pin. Behind it, the lines form a compass rose, and the top combines the Montblanc emblem with a skull and crossbones.

Other engravings trace Stevenson's life. His signature appears on the ring beside 1866, the publication year of The Pentland Rising. His lifespan, 1850–1894, is engraved on the upper section.

The ballpoint uses an original Montblanc refill and a twist mechanism to extend or retract the writing tip. Made in Germany, it measures 142.8 × 18.4 mm overall and weighs 54.7 g.

Questions & Answers

How does the design refer to Treasure Island?

The crosses and larger X recall a treasure map. Vertical lines suggest the Hispaniola's planks and a sea chest, while the form and cone rings resemble an extendable spyglass. A belaying-pin clip, compass rose, and skull-and-crossbones motif continue the maritime references.

What do the engraved dates mean?

1850–1894 records Stevenson's lifespan. The date 1866, engraved beside his signature on the ring, marks the publication of The Pentland Rising.

Which refill does it use, and how does the twist mechanism work?

It uses an original Montblanc ballpoint refill, offered in different ink colors and line widths. Twist the mechanism to extend or retract the writing tip.
