The Esterbrook Estie Nouveau Bleu button-piston fountain pen brings Alphonse Mucha’s Art Nouveau blues to a polished finish inspired by vintage pens.
Flowing figures, elaborate lettering, and soft colors are hallmarks of Alphonse Mucha’s illustrations. Nouveau Bleu takes its cue from the eau-de-nil blue he used in drapery, skies, wings, and water. The artist made his name in Belle Époque Paris in the 1890s, notably through his theater posters for Sarah Bernhardt, including Gismonda.
The blend of blues also recalls vintage celluloid pens, with a polished finish that links the Art Nouveau palette to the history of pen making. To introduce Nouveau Bleu, Esterbrook commissioned calligrapher and illustrator Debra Dick to create a painting that combined Mucha’s influence with her own drawing and lettering style.
Gold-tone trim adds a warm contrast to the blue finish. A button at the back of the barrel fills the built-in reservoir with bottled ink. The nib is made in Germany by JoWo, and a cushion closure inside the cap adds a second seal to help keep it from drying out.
