The Vostok Europe Expedition South Pole, limited to 3,000 watches, sets an automatic movement behind a semi-transparent black dial in a steel case with a compass bezel.
An automatic movement on view
The semi-transparent dial lets you see the S.Epson YN55 automatic movement at work. Every South Pole model uses either a solar or an automatic movement, so it needs no battery changes, even on expeditions that last for months.
Compass markings on the bezel
The bezel carries compass markings. On a sunny day, the markings and the hour hand help you find south.
The details
The Japanese-made S.Epson YN55 automatic movement has 22 jewels and a power reserve of 40 hours when fully wound. It powers the hours, minutes, seconds, and date, with hacking seconds and manual winding.
The 316L stainless steel case measures 43 mm across, 52.6 mm lug to lug, and 15.4 mm thick. A 3.7 mm thick K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. Super-LumiNova coats the hands and indexes. The crown and solid case back screw down, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The leather strap measures 22 mm at the lugs and fastens with a buckle. The watch ships in a Vostok Europe paper box.
Autonomy. The movements run for months on light or on the motion of the wrist, and the bezel carries compass markings for taking a bearing from the sun.
Point the hour hand at the sun and read the midpoint between the hand and the 12 marker, which gives south in the northern hemisphere. The compass markings hold that line as you walk.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.
The case measures 52.6 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 43 mm case diameter.
Seiko Epson in Japan. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014. The case is assembled in Lithuania around this automatic caliber.
