Vostok Europe Expedition South Pole Automatic shows its mechanism beneath a partly transparent black dial, with compass markings around the bezel.
South Pole includes automatic models wound by wrist motion and solar models that store energy from light. This automatic version has a partly transparent black dial within an uncoated steel case. The dial gives a view beneath the surface, while compass markings around the bezel continue the expedition theme.
Super-LumiNova marks the hands and hour markers beneath a 3.7 mm K1 crystal with anti-reflective coating. The 43 mm case is made from 316L stainless steel and measures 15.4 mm thick. The crown and solid case back screw down, and water resistance is rated at 20 atm.
The Japanese Seiko Epson YN55 automatic movement is visible beneath the partly transparent dial. It drives the hour, minute, and seconds hands and the date, with approximately 40 hours of running time from a full wind. The crown also allows hand winding and stops the seconds hand when pulled to set the time.
A leather strap measures 22 mm at the lugs and fastens with a buckle. Production is limited to 3,000 watches.

How does this South Pole model stay powered?
Wrist motion winds the automatic movement’s mainspring, which provides approximately 40 hours of running time from a full wind. The collection also includes solar models. Compass markings around the bezel can be used with the hands for approximate orientation by the sun.
How do I take a bearing with the bezel?
In the Northern Hemisphere, using local standard time, point the hour hand at the sun. The midpoint between the hour hand and 12 gives an approximate south bearing, which can be marked with the compass bezel. The scale records that reference rather than acting as a magnetic compass.
How does K1 crystal differ from sapphire?
K1 is reinforced mineral glass chosen for impact resistance. Sapphire is harder and more resistant to scratches, so the two materials have different strengths. The anti-reflective coating on this watch’s K1 crystal reduces glare.
Does the case diameter include the lugs?
The 43 mm diameter describes the width of the case. Its 52.6 mm lug-to-lug measurement runs in the other direction, from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. That longer measurement describes how far the case extends along the wrist, which the diameter alone does not show.
Where are the watch and its movement made?
Vostok Europe assembles the watch in Vilnius, Lithuania, using a Japanese movement from Seiko Epson. Founded in August 2003, the company began using Japanese movements in 2010 and stopped importing Russian movements in 2014.
