Overview

The Vostok Europe Energia II GMT, limited to 3,000 watches, is a 300-meter automatic diver with a second time zone and 17 Swiss tritium tubes.

Lit by 17 tritium tubes

Thirteen tritium tubes sit in metal reflectors on the dial, three more light the hands, and one sits in a sapphire capsule on the bezel. Each sealed glass tube glows continuously, without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.

A second time zone

The TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement adds a 24-hour hand that tracks a second time zone. When it is set to home time on a trip, you can read two time zones on the same dial.

Built for diving

The unidirectional bezel carries a diver scale, so you can time a dive from the moment you set it. A spring-loaded valve releases helium from the case when the pressure difference reaches a critical level. The valve matters in saturation diving, where helium seeps into the case and must escape during decompression.

Named for the Energia rocket

Energia, the launcher of the Soviet Energia-Buran program, first flew in 1987 after about 10 years of development. It could lift about 100 metric tons to low Earth orbit.

The details

The Japanese-made TMI NH34 automatic GMT movement has 24 jewels, beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and has a 41-hour power reserve when fully wound. It powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date, and GMT hand.

The 316L stainless steel case measures 48 mm across, 60.2 mm lug to lug, and 17.3 mm thick. A 3.5 mm thick K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the black dial and its metal indexes. The crown screws down, and the exhibition case back, fastened with screws, reveals the movement. The case has a spring-loaded helium release valve. Water resistance is rated at 300 meters.

The watch comes with a leather strap and a silicone strap, both 26 mm at the lugs. Each fastens with a buckle, and a replacement tool for strap changes is included. The watch ships in a Vostok Europe DryBox XL, which converts into a collector’s box for four watches.

Questions & Answers

What was the Energia rocket?

The launcher of the Soviet Energia-Buran program. It first flew in 1987 after 10 years of development and could lift about 100 metric tons to low Earth orbit. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.

How do the tritium tubes work?

Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow continuously without charging. This model carries 13 on the dial, 3 in the hands and 1 on the bezel. The Trigalight tubes are made in Switzerland by MB-microtec, a Vostok Europe supplier since 2009. After about 10 years, their brightness settles at approximately 50 percent.

How do I read the second time zone?

A fourth hand turns once every 24 hours against a 24-hour track, independent of the hour hand. Home time and local time can be read on the same dial.

What is the helium release valve for?

Saturation diving. Helium works into the case under pressure and escapes slowly during decompression, and the valve opens automatically to vent it before the pressure can push the crystal out.

What can you see through the case back?

The movement from the bridge side, with the rotor that winds the mainspring as the wrist moves and the balance swinging beside it.
