The Namiki Chinkin Pine Tree fountain pen depicts a tree whose symbolism is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. The pine represents longevity, good fortune, and steadfastness, with further associations of virtue and immortality. Its enduring character is the subject of the gold-inlaid motif on polished black urushi lacquer.
Kokkokai artisans form the tree using Chinkin. They engrave the pattern into the lacquered surface with special chisels, then apply lacquer inside the grooves before adding gold leaf or powder. This sequence gives the branches and other details their definition, keeping the carved motif distinct against the black ground.
A two-tone 18k gold nib completes the Japanese-made pen, which accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink and closes with a screw-on cap. It measures 137.3 mm capped with a barrel width of 12 mm and weighs 36.5 g with the cap. A converter and a wooden box are included.
