The Esterbrook Estie Nouveau Bleu fountain pen pays tribute to Alphonse Mucha through a blend of blues and a polished finish. The design draws on the Czech artist's Art Nouveau imagery and the Parisian world of the Belle Époque. Mucha's work included idealized figures and theatrical posters for stage actress Sarah Bernhardt, with Gismonda helping establish his reputation in the 1890s.
Esterbrook traces the blue palette to the drapery, skies, wings, and water in Mucha's illustrations. Blended color and a polished surface translate those references into a finish that recalls the appearance of vintage celluloid. For the launch, calligrapher and illustrator Debra Dick created a painting that interpreted Mucha's style in her own visual language.
This version has gold-colored trim. Its nib is made in Germany by JoWo. A button-piston filling system holds bottled ink in an internal reservoir; the filling button is accessed at the rear of the barrel. Inside the cap, Esterbrook’s cushion closure provides a secondary seal intended to reduce ink drying out between uses.
