Vostok Europe Nuclear Submarine SSN 571 sets a green dial against stonewashed black PVD, with tritium lighting on the hands and hour markers.
SSN 571 is the hull number of the USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear-powered submarine. On August 3, 1958, it became the first submarine to make a submerged crossing of the North Pole. The watch’s green dial is lit by twelve tritium tubes mounted upright in reflectors, with three more in the hands.
Black PVD coats the 316L stainless steel case, with a stonewashed finish giving the surface an uneven, worn texture. A unidirectional bezel surrounds the K1 crystal, whose anti-reflective coating reduces glare on the dial. The screw-down solid back carries a 3D image, and the case also has a screw-down crown and a helium release valve.
The Japanese TMI NH35 automatic movement winds with wrist motion and can also be wound by hand. It drives the hour, minute, and seconds hands and the date, with approximately 41 hours of running time from a full wind. Pulling the crown to set the time stops the seconds hand. The case measures 45.7 mm across and 15.6 mm thick, with water resistance rated at 30 atm.
Leather and silicone straps are included, each 22 mm at the lugs. The silicone strap has an expandable section. Its fasteners can be released with the included screwdriver or a small coin, and the set comes in a VE DryBox L.
SSN 571 is the hull number of the USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear-powered submarine. On August 3, 1958, it completed the first submerged crossing of the North Pole. Nuclear propulsion allowed longer periods at sea than the diesel-electric submarines of its time.
Tritium gas activates a luminous coating inside sealed glass tubes, so they glow continuously without a battery or prior light exposure. This watch has 12 on the dial and three in the hands. The Swiss Trigalight elements are made by mb-microtec, which has supplied Vostok Europe since 2009. The glow gradually fades as the tritium decays.
K1 is reinforced mineral glass chosen for impact resistance. Sapphire is harder and more resistant to scratches, so the two materials have different strengths. The anti-reflective coating on this watch’s K1 crystal reduces glare.
The 45.7 mm diameter describes the width of the case. Its 56.2 mm lug-to-lug measurement runs in the other direction, from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. That longer measurement describes how far the case extends along the wrist, which the diameter alone does not show.
Vostok Europe assembles the watch in Vilnius, Lithuania, using a Japanese movement from Time Module Inc. (TMI). Founded in August 2003, the company began using Japanese movements in 2010 and stopped importing Russian movements in 2014.
