Orange tachymeter markings stand out on the Vostok Europe Expedition North Pole Polar Sunrise, with a blue PVD case and solar chronograph.
North Pole 1 opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km from the Pole. The first drifting research station in the polar region traveled 2,850 km on its ice floe before closing on February 19, 1938. That expedition gives the North Pole collection its historical starting point.
The Polar Sunrise has a layered blue dial with openings over the solar cell beneath it. An orange tachymeter track stands out against the blue dial and blue PVD case. Super-LumiNova marks the hands and hour markers. Light passes through the dial to supply the movement, which stores the resulting energy in a rechargeable cell.
The Japanese Seiko Epson VR42 solar quartz movement adds a chronograph with separate elapsed-seconds and 30-minute readings to the hours, minutes, seconds, and date. Its 24-hour indicator follows the main time, while the power storage display shows the charge remaining. A full charge gives approximately five months of running time.
An anti-reflective 4.1 mm K1 crystal covers the dial. The 316L stainless steel case measures 47 mm across and 16.7 mm thick, with a solid back and a screw-down crown. Water resistance is rated at 20 atm.
Leather and silicone straps are included, both 24 mm at the lugs with buckle closures. The straps have quick-release spring bars, and production is limited to 3,000 watches.
It was the first drifting station for hydrological and geographical research in the polar region. Opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km from the Pole, it traveled 2,850 km on its ice floe over roughly nine months before closing on February 19, 1938.
Approximately five months from a full charge. A solar cell beneath the dial converts light into electricity stored in a rechargeable cell. Both natural and artificial light can charge it, but the time required depends on light intensity and exposure.
K1 is reinforced mineral glass chosen for impact resistance. Sapphire is harder and more resistant to scratches, so the two materials have different strengths. The anti-reflective coating on this watch’s K1 crystal reduces glare.
The 47 mm diameter describes the width of the case. Its 58.2 mm lug-to-lug measurement runs in the other direction, from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. That longer measurement describes how far the case extends along the wrist, which the diameter alone does not show.
Vostok Europe assembles the watch in Vilnius, Lithuania, using a Japanese movement from Seiko Epson. Founded in August 2003, the company began using Japanese movements in 2010 and stopped importing Russian movements in 2014.
It works with the chronograph to read an average rate from the time taken to cover a known unit of distance. The orange track is a fixed scale around the elapsed-time display, rather than a separate electronic sensor.
