Overview
Pinkish lacquer beneath amber-toned urushi gives the Nakaya Cigar Long Toki-Tamenuri fountain pen its color, inspired by the traditional Japanese toki-iro.
Toki-iro, a traditional Japanese color, inspired the pinkish base of this finish. Translucent, amber-toned shuai urushi lets that color show through, bringing both tones into the finished pen. The varying buildup of lacquer adds depth to the tame-nuri surface.
The body is ebonite, made from natural rubber and sulfur, with urushi providing the exterior finish.
Made by hand in Japan, this model has a 14k gold nib. A screw-on cap closes the pen, and the cartridge/converter system accepts cartridges or bottled fountain pen ink.
It measures 163 mm capped, with a barrel length of 143 mm and a barrel width of 15 mm. It weighs 25 g with the cap and 17 g without it.
Founded in 1999 by Toshiya Nakata, Nakaya brought together craftspeople who had worked at Platinum Pen for more than 40 years to make custom urushi fountain pens. The name comes from Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum’s predecessor.

Where do the pink and amber tones come from?
A pinkish lacquer base inspired by the traditional color toki-iro shows through translucent, amber-toned shuai urushi. Both layers contribute to the finished color.
Will the finish change with use?
Tame-nuri develops a more lustrous color with use. Its translucent topcoat lets the colored base remain visible, so the layered finish is part of the enjoyment of using the pen over time.
Can I use bottled ink?
Yes. The cartridge/converter system accepts a converter for bottled fountain pen ink, or you can use ink cartridges.
Will the color look exactly like the photos?
Natural urushi can vary slightly in color, so the shade of your pen may differ a little from the photographs.
How should I care for the urushi?
Keep the pen out of direct sunlight and away from extremely dry conditions. Wipe away ink promptly with a soft, damp cloth. If the ink does not come off, contact Nakaya.
