Deep black urushi gives the Nakaya Cigar Long Kuro-Roiro fountain pen its wet-looking gloss, carrying a traditional Japanese finish over ebonite.
Kuro-Roiro celebrates the depth and wet-looking gloss of traditional black urushi. Roiro is the name for this rich black, derived from the Roiro-nuri lacquer coating technique. With the color and sheen carried by the lacquer, the ebonite body gives the finish its underlying form.
The body is ebonite, made from natural rubber and sulfur, with urushi providing the exterior finish.
Made by hand in Japan, this model has a 14k gold nib with a two-tone gold and rhodium finish. A screw-on cap closes the pen, and the cartridge/converter system accepts cartridges or bottled fountain pen ink.
It measures 166 mm capped, with a barrel length of 128 mm and a barrel width of 15 mm. It weighs 20 g with the cap and 15 g without it.
Toshiya Nakata founded Nakaya in 1999 to make custom urushi fountain pens, working with craftspeople who had spent more than 40 years at Platinum Pen. The name comes from Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum’s predecessor.

Can I use bottled ink?
Yes. The cartridge/converter system accepts a converter for bottled fountain pen ink, or you can use ink cartridges.
How should I care for the urushi?
Keep the pen out of direct sunlight and away from extremely dry conditions. Wipe away ink promptly with a soft, damp cloth. If the ink does not come off, contact Nakaya.
