Overview
Turquoise urushi lends depth to the Nakaya Cigar Portable Heki-Tamenuri fountain pen, with a colored lacquer base visible through a transparent topcoat.
Turquoise heki-iro shows through a transparent layer of urushi, giving Heki-Tamenuri its depth. This is tame-nuri: a colored lacquer base beneath a translucent topcoat. The way the lacquer builds up across the surface becomes part of the finish, so the appeal lies in the layers as well as the color.
The body is ebonite, made from natural rubber and sulfur, with urushi providing the exterior finish.
Made by hand in Japan, this model has a 14k gold nib. A screw-on cap closes the pen, and the cartridge/converter system accepts cartridges or bottled fountain pen ink.
It measures 149 mm capped, with a barrel length of 128 mm and a barrel width of 15 mm. It weighs 20 g with the cap and 15 g without it.

What gives Heki-Tamenuri its depth?
A turquoise-colored lacquer base shows through a transparent urushi topcoat. This tame-nuri technique lets you see both the underlying color and the way the lacquer has built up across the surface.
Will the finish change with use?
Tame-nuri develops a more lustrous color with use. Its translucent topcoat lets the colored base remain visible, so the layered finish is part of the enjoyment of using the pen over time.
Can I use bottled ink?
Yes. The cartridge/converter system accepts a converter for bottled fountain pen ink, or you can use ink cartridges.
Will the color look exactly like the photos?
Natural urushi can vary slightly in color, so the shade of your pen may differ a little from the photographs.
How should I care for the urushi?
Keep the pen out of direct sunlight and away from extremely dry conditions. Wipe away ink promptly with a soft, damp cloth. If the ink does not come off, contact Nakaya.
