Glossy blue Wajima urushi sets the tone for the Nakaya Cigar Portable Kikyo fountain pen, accented by a rhodium-plated 14k gold nib.
Kikyo is named after bellflowers, with glossy blue Wajima urushi lacquer covering the ebonite body. Achieving the blue required repeated trials, reflecting the difficulty of developing this color in urushi.
Rhodium plating gives the 14k gold nib a silver-tone appearance against the blue lacquer. This Portable version is handmade in Japan and has a 15 mm barrel width.
The pen accepts ink cartridges or a converter for bottled ink and closes with a screw-on cap. It measures 149 mm capped, with a barrel length of 128 mm and a barrel width of 15 mm. It weighs 20 g with the cap and 15 g without the cap.
Tokyo-based Nakaya began specializing in custom urushi fountain pens in 1999, when Toshiya Nakata brought together craftsmen with more than 40 years of experience at Platinum Pen. The name recalls Nakaya Manufacturing Company, established in 1924 as Platinum's predecessor.

Why is the blue finish called Kikyo?
Kikyo is named after bellflowers. Developing this glossy blue in urushi required repeated trials, as blue is a difficult color to achieve in lacquer.
Why does the gold nib have a silver-tone finish?
The nib is made from 14k gold with rhodium plating, which gives its surface a silver-tone appearance.
Does it take cartridges or bottled ink?
It accepts ink cartridges, or you can use a converter for bottled ink.
How should I care for the urushi finish?
Store it away from direct sunlight and extremely dry conditions. If ink gets on the lacquer, wipe it off promptly with a soft cloth dampened with water.
