Overview
The Vostok Europe Lunokhod-2 pairs 15 Swiss tritium tubes on its graphite dial and hands with a perpetual calendar, an alarm, and a helium release valve.
Lit by 15 tritium tubes
Thirteen tritium tubes stand vertically in reflectors on the dial, and two more sit in the hour and minute hands. Each sealed glass tube glows continuously, without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp. Vostok Europe guarantees the glow for at least 10 years.
A perpetual calendar and an alarm
The S.Epson YM86 multifunction quartz movement keeps a perpetual calendar that follows the length of each month, leap years included, and shows the day of the week. It adds a 24-hour alarm, a 24-hour chronograph, small seconds, and world time hours and minutes.
Built for deep water
The unidirectional rotating bezel lets you time a dive from the moment you set its marker. An automatic valve releases helium from the case once the pressure difference reaches a critical level, a safeguard during decompression after saturation diving.
Named for Lunokhod-2
Lunokhod-2 landed on the Moon on January 15, 1973, and drove about 39 km (24 miles) in four months, a distance record that stood until 2014. It also sent back more than 80,000 television images.
The details
The Japanese-made S.Epson YM86 multifunction quartz movement powers the hours, minutes, small seconds, day of the week, and perpetual calendar. It also powers the world time hours and minutes, the 24-hour chronograph, and the alarm.
The 316L stainless steel case measures 49 mm across, 56.6 mm lug to lug, and 17.5 mm thick. A 3.5 mm thick K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. The case has an automatic helium release valve. The crown and solid case back screw down, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The watch comes with a leather strap and a silicone strap, both 25 mm at the lugs and fastened with a buckle. A replacement tool for swapping them is included. The watch ships in a Vostok Europe DryBox L protective case.

What did Lunokhod-2 do?
It landed on the Moon on January 15, 1973, and worked for about 4 months. It covered about 39 km, a distance record for a rover on another world until 2014, and sent back 86 panoramas and more than 80,000 television images. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.
How do the tritium tubes work?
Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow continuously without charging. This model carries 13 on the dial and 2 in the hands. The Trigalight tubes are made in Switzerland by MB-microtec, a Vostok Europe supplier since 2009. After about 10 years, their brightness settles at approximately 50 percent.
How does the world time function work?
A separate pair of hands shows the time in a second city in 24-hour format, set independently from the main hands through the crown and the pushers.
What does the perpetual calendar do here?
It adjusts the date and day to the length of each month, including leap years, so the calendar follows the year automatically.
What is the helium release valve for?
Saturation diving. Helium enters the case under pressure and escapes slowly during decompression, and the valve opens automatically to vent it before the pressure can push the crystal out.
