The Vostok Europe Atomic Age Sakharov pairs a meca-quartz chronograph and 14 Swiss tritium tubes with a black and red dial in a black PVD case.
Lit by 14 tritium tubes
Twelve tritium tubes stand vertically in metal reflectors around the dial, and two more sit in the hour and minute hands. Each sealed glass tube glows continuously, without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.
A meca-quartz chronograph
The TMI VK64 keeps time with quartz and drives its chronograph through a mechanical module. The chronograph times intervals of up to 60 minutes, with a central seconds hand and a 60-minute counter. On reset, its hands snap back to zero instantly. A subdial carries a 24-hour indicator.
A layered dial in a riveted case
The black and red dial is built in layers, with a grain texture, polished metal indexes, and brushed skeletonized hands. The case, finished in black PVD, is made of two metal parts welded together and secured by two rivets. The solid case back bears the Atomic Age logo in 3D.
Named for Andrei Sakharov
The Atomic Age collection marks the nuclear era, which began when Chicago Pile-1, the first nuclear reactor, went critical on December 2, 1942. The collection has three lines, each honoring a 20th-century physicist. The Sakharov line is named for Andrei Sakharov, a Soviet nuclear physicist and dissident who received the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize.
The details
The Japanese-made TMI VK64 meca-quartz chronograph movement powers the hours, minutes, date, central chronograph seconds, 60-minute counter, and 24-hour indicator.
The 316L stainless steel case, finished in black PVD, measures 48 mm across, 58.3 mm lug to lug, and 16.4 mm thick. A 3.7 mm thick curved K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. The crown screws down, and so does the solid case back with its 3D logo. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The watch comes with a silicone strap with ventilation holes and a leather strap, both 25 mm at the lugs. Each fastens with a buckle, and a replacement tool for strap changes is included. The watch ships in a red Vostok Europe DryBox XL, which converts into a collector’s box for four watches.
The nuclear era that opened with the first reactor in 1942. The collection has 3 lines, dedicated to Enrico Fermi, Andrei Sakharov and Robert Oppenheimer. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.
Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow continuously without charging. This model carries 12 on the dial and 2 in the hands. The Trigalight tubes are made in Switzerland by MB-microtec, a Vostok Europe supplier since 2009. After about 10 years, their brightness settles at approximately 50 percent.
A quartz caliber with a mechanically driven chronograph module. Quartz keeps the time, and the central chronograph hand is actuated mechanically, allowing it to reset instantly to zero.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.
The case measures 58.3 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 48 mm case diameter.
