Overview

The Vostok Europe Atomic Age Oppenheimer pairs a multifunction quartz movement and 14 Swiss tritium tubes with a black and sand dial in a black PVD case.

Lit by 14 tritium tubes

Twelve tritium tubes stand vertically in metal reflectors around the dial, and two more sit in the hour and minute hands. Each sealed glass tube glows continuously, without a battery or any need for prior exposure to sunlight or a lamp.

A multifunction movement

The S.Epson YM86 quartz movement shows world time in hours and minutes beside the main time, with small seconds and the day of the week. Its perpetual calendar follows months of different lengths and leap years. An audible alarm and a 24-hour chronograph complete the functions.

A layered dial in a riveted case

The black and sand dial is built in layers, with a grain texture, polished metal indexes, and brushed skeletonized hands. The case, finished in black PVD, is made of two metal parts welded together and secured by two rivets. The solid case back bears the Atomic Age logo in 3D.

Named for J. Robert Oppenheimer

The Atomic Age collection marks the nuclear era, which began when Chicago Pile-1, the first nuclear reactor, went critical on December 2, 1942. The collection has three lines, each honoring a 20th-century physicist. The Oppenheimer line is named for J. Robert Oppenheimer, who directed the Los Alamos laboratory and served as scientific director of the Manhattan Project. He later chaired the General Advisory Committee of the US Atomic Energy Commission.

The details

The Japanese-made S.Epson YM86 multifunction quartz movement powers the hours, minutes, small seconds, world time, day of the week, perpetual calendar, audible alarm, and 24-hour chronograph.

The 316L stainless steel case, finished in black PVD, measures 48 mm across, 58.3 mm lug to lug, and 16.4 mm thick. A 3.7 mm thick curved K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. The crown screws down, and so does the solid case back with its 3D logo. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters.

The watch comes with a silicone strap with ventilation holes and a leather strap, both 25 mm at the lugs. Each fastens with a buckle, and a replacement tool for strap changes is included. The watch ships in a red Vostok Europe DryBox XL, which converts into a collector’s box for four watches.

Questions & Answers

What does the Atomic Age collection mark?

The nuclear era that opened with the first reactor in 1942. The collection has 3 lines, dedicated to Enrico Fermi, Andrei Sakharov and Robert Oppenheimer. Vostok Europe, founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2003, has used Japanese movements since 2010 and stopped using Russian ones in 2014.

How do the tritium tubes work?

Each marker is a sealed glass tube in which tritium gas makes a luminescent coating glow continuously without charging. This model carries 12 on the dial and 2 in the hands. The Trigalight tubes are made in Switzerland by MB-microtec, a Vostok Europe supplier since 2009. After about 10 years, their brightness settles at approximately 50 percent.

How does the world time function work?

A separate pair of hands shows the time in a second city in 24-hour format, set independently from the main hands through the crown and the pushers.

What does the perpetual calendar do here?

It adjusts the date and day to the length of each month, including leap years, so the calendar follows the year automatically.

What is K1 crystal?

A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.
