The Herbelin Fil sets gold Arabic numerals on a white mother-of-pearl dial, in a round case and rigid bangle finished in yellow gold PVD.
Worn like a bangle
Yellow gold PVD covers both the round, bezel-free case and the rigid bangle. The watch is light enough for a slender wrist.
Mother-of-pearl and gold
Gold Arabic numerals stand out on the white mother-of-pearl dial. Because mother-of-pearl comes from the inner layer of a shell, its sheen varies from one dial to the next.
A 1970s jewelry watch
Fil dates from the 1970s, when Herbelin was an early maker of jewelry watches. Its organic lines draw on the Nordic design of Alvar Aalto.
The details
The Swiss Ronda 751 quartz movement powers the hours and minutes beneath a sapphire crystal. The stainless steel 316L case with yellow gold PVD measures 26 mm across and 6.3 mm thick. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters. The slender yellow gold PVD bangle fastens with a jewelry clasp. Herbelin assembles the watch by hand in France.
The design dates to the 1970s, when Herbelin pioneered the jewelry watch. Later reissued on a slender rigid bangle, it is light enough for a slender wrist. Herbelin has made watches since 1947. The family business is now in its 3rd generation, led since 2020 by the founder’s grandsons, Maxime and Mathieu Herbelin.
The watch is assembled by hand in Herbelin’s workshops in Charquemont, in the French Jura near the Swiss border, and passes 65 quality checks. Its movement is Swiss. Herbelin retains spare parts to restore its models, including older ones.
Its 3 atm rating allows for splashes and showering. Water sports are best avoided. Herbelin recommends having the seals checked every 2 years.
It will look similar, with its own character. Mother-of-pearl is cut from a shell’s inner layer, so the sheen and play of color vary from 1 dial to the next.
PVD bonds a thin, hard layer of gold-colored metal to the steel in a vacuum chamber. It withstands daily wear far better than plating, though solvents and hard impacts can still mark it.
