The 46.5 mm U-Boat Darkmoon Kama SS Gray covers its gray sunray dial with a photochromic filter that darkens gradually in sunlight.
A dial that darkens in sunlight
Sunray brushing on the gray metal dial catches the light and shifts its reflections as you move your wrist. The purple photochromic filter sits above the brushed surface, and as it darkens, the dial beneath it looks darker too. The raised U-shaped hour marker and the hands carry black Super-LumiNova.
Immersed in oil
Oil surrounds the dial and the Swiss Ronda 762 quartz movement. As in other Darkmoon watches, the oil adds visual depth beneath the domed sapphire crystal. A compensation bubble leaves room for the oil to expand or contract as the temperature changes. When the watch is off your wrist, U-Boat specifies a temperature range of 32–140°F (0–60°C).
Rooted in a 1942 naval design
The left-side crown comes from Ilvo Fontana’s 1942 plans for an Italian Navy watch that was never built. His grandson Italo revived the design in Lucca. On the Darkmoon, the crown screws down.
The details
The 46.5 mm case and case back are 316L stainless steel, and the case is water-resistant to 50 meters. A laser-engraved QR code sits alongside the Locking Ring System for battery access.
The black calfskin strap closes with a 316L stainless steel pin buckle. The watch is made in Italy.
The purple filter gradually darkens, changing the appearance of the gray sunray-finished dial beneath it. The effect comes from the filter, separate from the oil inside the case.
The bubble is an intentional part of the oil-filled construction. It leaves room for the oil to change volume with temperature and moves as the watch changes position.
The U-shaped hour marker is a separate raised element above the dial surface. It carries black Super-LumiNova, giving the dial a raised detail that also glows in low light.
