Herbelin Newport Slim Watch with Blue Mother-of-Pearl Dial.
Newport took shape in 1988 from the yachts of the America’s Cup at Newport, Rhode Island, and from the portholes of transatlantic sailboats. The Newport Slim reworks the watch of 1988 into the first Newport below 8 mm, its bezel freed of screws but still engraved NEWPORT. Stainless steel 316L with yellow gold PVD, 40 mm in diameter and 5.8 mm thick.
A Swiss Ronda 704-1 quartz movement powers the hours and minutes beneath a sapphire crystal. The central lugs and ship’s-wheel crown remain, and the case is cut in three polished facets.
Faceted gold indexes mark the blue mother-of-pearl dial. It comes on a blue crocodile-embossed leather strap measuring 21 mm at the lugs, secured by a pin buckle.
In 1988, inspired by the yachts of the America’s Cup at Newport, Rhode Island. It has since sold 500,000 pieces and remains the best-selling line of Herbelin. Herbelin has made watches since 1947, and the family is now in its 3rd generation, led since 2020 by Maxime and Mathieu Herbelin, grandsons of the founder.
In the Herbelin workshops at Charquemont, in the French Jura near the Swiss border. Each watch is assembled by hand and passes 65 quality checks, and Herbelin keeps spare parts on hand to restore its models, older ones included. The movements are Swiss.
Rated to 3 atm, it takes splashes and a shower. Water sports are best avoided, and Herbelin advises having the seals checked every 2 years.
Close, with its own character. Mother-of-pearl is cut from the inner layer of a shell, so the sheen and the play of color change from one dial to the next.
PVD bonds a thin, hard layer of gold-colored metal to the steel in a vacuum chamber, so it holds up to daily wear far better than plating. Solvents and hard knocks can still mark it.
