Overview

Herbelin Cap Camarat Square Automatic Watch with Blue Dial.

Cap Camarat takes its name from a cape south of the Saint-Tropez peninsula and reworks a 1970s Herbelin watch in a French Riviera spirit. The Cap Camarat Square Automatic turns the case into a square with softened corners, its brushed bezel held by six screws and its marinière lines recalling the deck of a sailing boat. At 39 mm across and 10.35 mm thick, the case is stainless steel 316L.

A Swiss Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, with a 41-hour power reserve, powers the hours, minutes and date beneath a sapphire crystal, and the case closes on a see-through back that reveals the rotor.

The blue dial shades in a blue gradient beneath a horizontal striped marinière finish. It is delivered on a steel bracelet with brushed links, measuring 25 mm at the lugs, secured by a folding clasp.

Questions & Answers

Where does the name Cap Camarat come from?

From a cape south of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, swept by Mediterranean spray. The collection reworks a Herbelin watch of the 1970s. Herbelin has made watches since 1947, and the family is now in its 3rd generation, led since 2020 by Maxime and Mathieu Herbelin, grandsons of the founder.

Where is it made?

In the Herbelin workshops at Charquemont, in the French Jura near the Swiss border. Each watch is assembled by hand and passes 65 quality checks, and Herbelin keeps spare parts on hand to restore its models, older ones included. The movements are Swiss.

Can I swim with it?

Rated to 10 atm, it is suitable for swimming and water activities. Keep the crown pushed in, leave it untouched while wet, and rinse the watch in fresh water after the sea.

How long does it run when it is not worn?

A full wind delivers about a 41-hour power reserve. Daily wear keeps the mainspring topped up, and after a longer rest in a drawer a few turns of the crown restart it.

How well does the crystal hold up?

Sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale and ranks among the most scratch-resistant materials in watchmaking, so few things encountered in normal wear will mark it. A violent knock can still crack it.

Slight recessed spot on bezel, visible in light

The watch came with a small quality flaw on the bezel along the right side of the crystal. It’s as if one section is slightly recessed, and it becomes noticeable under the light.

Thank you very much for your review. We’re sorry about this issue with the bezel; the watch is currently with our service center for inspection, and as soon as we receive it back, we will send it to you right away.
