The Vostok Europe Expedition North Pole Polar Night pairs an S.Epson automatic movement with a bidirectional pulsometer bezel in a black PVD case.
A pulsometer bezel
The bezel turns in both directions and carries a pulsometer scale with a luminous dot. To take a pulse, you line up the start of the scale with the seconds hand and count off the number of beats the scale is calibrated for. The seconds hand then points to the pulse rate per minute. It also gives a breathing rate.
A textured dial with a green ring
A green bezel ring frames the textured multi-layer dial and its skeletonized hands. Super-LumiNova on the hands, indexes, and dial ring helps you read the time in the dark.
Inspired by North Pole-1
The Expedition North Pole line draws on North Pole-1, the first drifting research station, which opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km (12 miles) from the Pole. The station drifted more than 2,000 km (about 1,240 miles) on the ice before its crew was evacuated on February 19, 1938.
The details
The Japanese-made S.Epson YN55 automatic movement has 22 jewels and a power reserve of 40 hours when fully wound. It powers the hours, minutes, seconds, and date, with hacking seconds and manual winding.
The 316L stainless steel case, finished in black PVD, measures 48 mm across, 58.2 mm lug to lug, and 17.4 mm thick. A 4 mm thick K1 crystal, a hardened mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating, covers the dial. The crown and solid case back screw down, and water resistance is rated at 200 meters.
The watch comes with a leather strap and a silicone strap, both 24 mm at the lugs and fastened with a buckle. Quick-release spring bars let you swap them without tools. The watch ships in a Vostok Europe paper box.
The first drifting station for hydrological and geographical research in the polar area. It opened on June 6, 1937, about 20 km from the Pole. Over 9 months it drifted more than 2,000 km on its ice floe, and it closed on February 19, 1938.
You line the start of the scale up with the seconds hand, count a fixed number of beats and read the rate per minute directly from the ring.
A synthetic crystal that combines the shock resistance of hardened mineral glass with scratch resistance close to that of sapphire. On this watch, the crystal has an anti-reflective coating to improve readability.
The case measures 58.2 mm from lug to lug. That span across the top of the wrist matters more for fit than the 48 mm case diameter.
