Venezianico Arsenale Ultrablack sets two hands against a Musou Black™ dial that absorbs 99.4% of light.
A dial that absorbs light
Because Musou Black™ paint reflects almost nothing, the dial looks unusually deep. Venezianico tested and adapted the coating for its brass dial base. The watch shows just hours and minutes, so the dial stays uncluttered and sets off the hands and the polished, knurled bezel.
Thin enough for a cuff
The watch slides easily under a shirt cuff. The integrated rubber strap follows the angular lines of the case and stays flexible on the wrist.
A space station on the back
A space station is engraved on the case back, in keeping with the cosmic feel of the dial. The engraving also recalls the expeditions and technical experimentation associated with Venice’s Arsenale, the shipyard behind the collection’s name.
The details
The Japanese Miyota 9029 automatic movement powers the two-hand display, with no date. The 316L stainless steel case measures 40 mm across, 44 mm lug to lug, and 8.95 mm thick, including the anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 50 meters. The black rubber strap attaches to the case with a steel end link and fastens with a pin buckle.
The name comes from the Arsenale, the Venetian Republic’s shipyard. Its specialized workshops built and fitted out ships in sequence, supplying the fleet long before modern factories. The collection takes its design inspiration from that history of shipbuilding and metalworking.
Musou Black™ is a Japanese paint that absorbs 99.4% of incident light. Very little light returns from the surface, reducing reflections and making the hands stand out against a dark background. It is a dial coating, not a luminous material.
Wind it by hand before putting it on. Venezianico recommends about 20–30 turns of the crown to provide an initial reserve. If the crown screws down, unscrew it before winding and secure it afterward. The rotor replenishes the reserve as you wear the watch, though light activity may not supply enough energy to keep it running.
Sapphire’s hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes it highly resistant to everyday scratches. It can still be scratched by harder materials, and a hard impact can chip or crack it, especially at an edge.
Miyota, part of the Citizen group, manufactures the 9029 in Japan. This 9-series automatic runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and also allows hand winding. Venezianico uses it in a watch made in Italy.
