Limited to 300 watches, the 46 mm U-Boat Chimera SS Black puts its construction on display with five exposed tie rods.
Built around exposed tie rods
The tie rods run around the case to join the bezel and case back, and their screws require a dedicated key.
A two-level striped dial
Stripes run across the two-level black metal dial. Laser-cut openings for the numerals and markers reveal a second layer of brushed metal underneath. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal covers the dial, framed by a polished tungsten bezel.
Rooted in a 1942 naval design
The left-side crown comes from Ilvo Fontana’s 1942 plans for an Italian Navy watch that was never built. His grandson Italo revived the design in Lucca. On the Chimera, a patented lever at 10 o’clock releases the crown, which sits under a large screw-down cap.
The details
The 46 mm case is 316L stainless steel and water-resistant to 100 meters.
The Swiss ETA 2824 Top Soigné automatic movement displays the hours, minutes, and seconds, along with the date and a 24-hour indication. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with 25 jewels and a 38-hour power reserve. A smoked mineral crystal window in the back shows the movement.
The black leather strap is laser-cut, naturally aged, and handmade in Tuscany. It closes with a steel pin buckle. The watch is made in Italy.
External tie rods connect the bezel and back around the case. The five fasteners are visible from the outside, so the way the case is held together is part of its appearance.
Two overlapping layers create the relief. Cutouts in the upper metal layer reveal brushed metal beneath the striped surface.
A smoked mineral-glass window in the steel case back provides a view of the automatic movement. The front crystal is sapphire, so the two windows use different materials.
It distinguishes morning from evening. The main hour hand goes around the dial twice a day, while the 24-hour hand makes one full turn; read it against its own scale to tell, for example, 4 a.m. from 4 p.m.
