The U-Boat Capsule 50 PVD takes its shape from the viewing ports of 1930s bathyspheres and is limited to 200 watches.
A porthole case and a layered dial
A thick, domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating covers the front of the rounded steampunk case, and a smaller circular sapphire window is set into its side. Beneath the domed crystal, the black dial is built from three overlapping metal layers. Brushed metal numerals and markers add texture. Blue Super-LumiNova coats them and the hands.
A crown released by a lever
A patented lever at 10 o’clock releases the protected crown. An opening in the dial shows the linkage underneath.
Rooted in a 1942 naval design
The left-side crown comes from Ilvo Fontana’s 1942 plans for an Italian Navy watch that was never built. His grandson Italo revived the design in Lucca.
The details
The 50 mm case is 316L stainless steel treated with black PVD. It is water-resistant to 100 meters. Four external screws hold the laser-engraved back in place, and a separate screwed-on plate carries the serial number.
The Swiss Sellita SW 200 automatic movement is customized to U-Boat’s specifications, with a skeletonized rotor, 26 jewels, and a 41-hour power reserve. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and displays the hours, minutes, seconds, and date.
Handmade from naturally aged, laser-cut black calfskin, the strap looks worn-in from the start. It is hand-stitched with waxed cotton and tapers from 23 mm at the lugs to 22 mm at the PVD-coated steel pin buckle. The watch is made in Italy.
The case and domed crystal recall the rounded viewing ports of 1930s bathyspheres. A circular sapphire side window and visible mechanical details continue that underwater-instrument theme.
A patented lever at 10 o’clock releases the protected left-side crown. An opening in the three-layer dial reveals part of the linkage, making the mechanism visible from the front.
The reference is limited to 200 watches. A serial-number plate is screwed to the laser-engraved case back.
