Overview
Black-tinted urushi over vermilion gives the Nakaya Cigar Portable Kuro-Tamenuri fountain pen its dark, layered finish on a handmade ebonite body.
Black-tinted shuai urushi lies over a base of shu, or vermilion, lacquer. Together, the two colors give Kuro-Tamenuri its dark, layered character. Its depth comes from the colored undercoat beneath the upper lacquer, offering a different expression of black from Kuro-Roiro’s glossy finish.
The body is ebonite, made from natural rubber and sulfur, with urushi providing the exterior finish.
Made by hand in Japan, this model has a 14k gold nib. A screw-on cap closes the pen, and the cartridge/converter system accepts cartridges or bottled fountain pen ink.
It measures 130 mm capped, with a barrel length of 116 mm and a barrel width of 15 mm. It weighs 23 g with the cap and 15 g without it.
Nakaya began making custom urushi fountain pens in 1999 under its founder, Toshiya Nakata, with craftspeople who had worked at Platinum Pen for more than 40 years. Its name comes from Nakaya Manufacturing Company, founded in 1924 as Platinum’s predecessor.

How does Kuro-Tamenuri differ from Kuro-Roiro?
Kuro-Tamenuri layers black-tinted shuai urushi over vermilion lacquer. Kuro-Roiro is a traditional glossy black finish named after the Roiro-nuri technique. The difference is in how the lacquer creates the color.
Will the finish change with use?
Tame-nuri develops a more lustrous color with use. Its translucent topcoat lets the colored base remain visible, so the layered finish is part of the enjoyment of using the pen over time.
Can I use bottled ink?
Yes. The cartridge/converter system accepts a converter for bottled fountain pen ink, or you can use ink cartridges.
How should I care for the urushi?
Keep the pen out of direct sunlight and away from extremely dry conditions. Wipe away ink promptly with a soft, damp cloth. If the ink does not come off, contact Nakaya.
